KATIE MELILLO

I was never an internal creative, but I always had hopes that one day I would be able to unlock these abilities and externalize my creativity. Growing up, my brother was the creative sibling, creating some jealousy on my end. However, putting myself in these uncomfortable situations showed me the passion that was hidden for nearly twenty years of my life. Before I transferred to ECSU, I took a few art classes at my previous college, transforming my motivations and career goals. With each design I create, my technical skills grow, as well as my creativity; I am constantly learning how to let my ideas flow and not focus too heavily on if they are ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. Within my art, my biggest motivator is music, which is unsurprising, as music is such an important part of my life. I aim to create designs that are a direct complement to my mind and my interests, which is why music is the key motivator. Overall, I recognize that I am still learning and improving as an artist, and hopefully that is shown in my art and designs.

For my senior project, I chose to design new merchandise for one of my favorite bands, The 1975. I chose to create my designs combining the band’s graphic style with my own style. A large portion of my designs are inspired by the band’s discography, compared to the band members. My take on this project was to create designs that were not overly complex, but loud and eye-catching. I chose to design an array of products for this project to challenge myself, but also to show my ability to create designs for different mediums (clothing, posters, website, etc.). Creating this entire project was incredibly entertaining, as I am highly inspired by music and this band’s design style. Following this project, I will also be able to wear my designs into the world, letting my designs exist in a tangible manner compared to just a computer screen. I hope you enjoy!
